Step by Step: Set Up Your Order in the Apple Store Today
Apple’s iPhone Duo buy page says: "Get ready for iPhone Duo pre-order. Choose your new iPhone today, then speed through checkout when pre-order starts at 5:00 a.m. PT on 10.16." Setting everything up now saves minutes on Friday. Apple doesn’t promise first-day delivery or say how many phones it has. The delivery date Apple shows at checkout is your real answer, and it can move later as orders come in.
Apple’s steps, in its order, as read October 14, 2026:
Step 1, Color. Star White or Night Sky.

Screenshots: apple.com, October 14, 2026. Your page may look different.
Step 2, Storage. Apple has a "Not sure how much storage to get?" helper. Prices:

| Storage | Buy | Finance, per month (Apple Card, 24 months) | Lease, per month (Apple Upgrade) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | $83.29 | from $57.99 |
| 512GB | $2,199 | $91.62 | $63.80 |
| 1TB | $2,599 | $108.29 | $75.40 |
| 2TB | $3,199 | $133.29 | $92.81 |
Note: As read on Apple’s buy page October 14, 2026. A lease is rented, not owned.
Step 3, Apple Trade In. Apple’s header says "Get $35-$885 credit towards your new iPhone." Choose "Add a trade-in" and "Answer a few questions to get your estimate," or "No trade-in."

Step 4, Payment. Pick "Buy" (Apple Pay or other payment methods), "Finance" ("Pay over time at 0% APR") or "Lease with Apple Upgrade" ("Pay monthly with Klarna"). Finance shows "$83.29/mo. for 24 mo." (Apple Card Monthly Installments) and "From $55.52/mo. for 36 mo. with a carrier." Those monthly prices don’t include sales tax, which is due up front on the full price (see below).

Step 5, Connectivity. Under "Choose a carrier," pick AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or "Connect to any carrier later." Apple Card financing and Apple Upgrade need AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon, not a prepaid plan.

Step 6, AppleCare. Choose "AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss" ("$19.99/mo. or $199.99/yr. until cancelled"), "AppleCare One" ("$19.99/mo. until cancelled" for up to 3 products, $5.99/mo. for each more) or "No AppleCare coverage."

Step 7, Summary. It reads "Your new iPhone Duo. Just the way you want it." and shows your configuration, the price, a "Get ready for pre-order" button and "Need a moment?" with "Save for later." Press "Get ready for pre-order" or "Save for later" to keep your choices. Delivery shows "Free shipping" and "Pick up from Store." We pressed neither, so we can’t describe what comes next; Apple’s page says you can pick up right where you left off. Apple’s page says saving keeps your selections in "Your Saves." If it asks you to sign in, use the Apple Account you will check out with.

Step 8, Friday at 5:00 a.m. Pacific. Sign in, open your saved choices and check out. Read the delivery or pickup date shown at checkout.
Prefer your phone? Apple says its Apple Store app "is the fastest way to purchase standard-configured" iPhone products. You can also order at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
Tonight: Check Your Account, Card and Carrier
- Budget for sales tax up front. Sales tax is figured on the full price and is part of your order total, even if you pay monthly. AT&T charges it on the "full retail price" and T-Mobile on the "pre-credit price" at the time of sale. With Apple Card Monthly Installments, the tax goes on your Apple Card at the card’s regular rate, not 0%. Each 1% of sales tax adds about $20 on a $1,999 phone, so 8% is about $160. Apple authorizes your card when you order and charges it when the phone ships.
- Check your card. The billing address must match the card account, and new or reissued cards must be activated. Apple charges the card after the order ships. Debit funds are held right away, and daily debit limits can delay an order.
- Check eSIM. The Duo does not support a physical SIM. It needs a carrier and plan that support eSIM, plus Wi-Fi for setup. Ask your carrier. Verizon customers must also verify their carrier account before checkout.
- No Apple Card yet? Apply in Wallet first. Apple says you can see if you’re approved with no impact on your credit score, but accepting the card "will result in a hard inquiry."
- Delivery or pickup? Apple doesn’t ship to P.O. boxes, and pickup availability isn’t known until checkout. For delivery day, see how to protect a parent’s packages from porch pirates.
Carrier Deals and Trade-Ins: Read the Fine Print First
Carriers say these offers can change. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon below were re-read on October 16, 2026, the morning pre-orders opened; the Apple figures are as read October 14, 2026.
- Apple Trade In (as read October 14, 2026): "up to" iPhone 13 $175, iPhone 14 $195, iPhone 15 $305, iPhone 16 $430, iPhone 17 $585, iPhone 17 Pro Max $885. Ceilings, not guarantees.
- AT&T (as read October 16, 2026): "up to $1,200" comes as 36 monthly bill credits. It needs a trade-in valued at $230 or more and the Premium 2.0 plan ($100 a month or more before discounts); lower plans get less (up to $930 on Extra 2.0 or higher with a trade-in worth $130 or more). AT&T’s offer details say its 55+ plans are not eligible. Cancel service and the credits stop, and you owe the remaining device balance. $35 activation or upgrade fee.
- T-Mobile (as read October 16, 2026, on T-Mobile’s own Duo page): "up to $1,000" is only on Experience Beyond 2.0, Experience Beyond or Go5G Next (a $100+ a month plan with AutoPay). The 55+ version lists up to $800 on Experience Beyond 2.0 with 55+ Savings (an $85+ a month plan with AutoPay), and new members can get it there; through Apple’s store, T-Mobile’s Duo deal excludes new customers on 55+ plans. Credits stop if you pay off early or cancel. $35 device connection charge.
- Verizon (as read October 16, 2026): no Duo trade-in deal on Verizon’s own Duo page the morning pre-orders opened, but Apple’s store lists a Verizon Duo deal (for example, up to $840 for existing customers on Unlimited Ultimate, $95 a month or more with AutoPay, kept for 36 months). Verizon’s 55+ plan is Florida-only (as read October 14, 2026).
- Still getting credits on the phone you have now? If your current phone came from a carrier deal paid as monthly bill credits, upgrading early usually ends the credits you haven’t received yet, and you may owe the rest of that phone’s balance. AT&T’s terms say the phone must stay on its agreement for the full term to get all credits, and a trade-in phone "may not be on existing installment plan." T-Mobile says credits stop if you pay off early, and its early-upgrade option ends the promo credits. Verizon’s terms say paying off early reverses promo credits. Ask your carrier how many months of credits you would give up before you order (as read October 14, 2026).
- Apple Upgrade (as read October 14, 2026) is a Klarna lease: from $57.99 a month for 24 months or $82.99 for 12. You don’t own the phone, and leaving early means paying every remaining payment plus tax. AppleCare isn’t included. The application needs a Social Security number or ITIN, and Klarna doesn’t accept American Express, UnionPay or cards from Chase, Capital One or Citi. Apple’s old iPhone Upgrade Program does not cover the Duo.
- Apple Card installments (as read October 14, 2026): 0% APR for 24 months on the phone. Tax and shipping are charged at the card’s regular variable APR, 17.74% to 27.99% on new accounts as of October 1, 2026.
- Return windows differ (as read October 14, 2026): Apple 14 days from receipt. Verizon 30 days, with a $50 restocking fee on a wireless device (except Hawaii) unless an exception applies. T-Mobile 14 days (20 if shipped). AT&T 14 days. A return can void a carrier promotion.
Go after a carrier credit only on the plan you already have. Switching to a pricier plan for a bigger credit can cost more than it saves.
Gleemo isn’t a financial advisor. Prices and carrier terms change often. Read the terms and your credit situation first, and confirm with the seller before you buy.
Trading In Your Old iPhone: Back Up First, Erase Last
Apple shows your estimate in the buy flow. Value depends on model and condition and must match what you told Apple. If not, Apple sends a revised value you can accept or reject, and monthly payers are charged the difference.
- Apple must receive your old phone within 14 days of the day you receive the new one.
- Returning the new phone cancels the trade-in. Apple: "your trade-in will be cancelled automatically and in some cases it may not be possible to return your device."
Then prepare the old phone, per Apple Support:
- Back up. Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup, Back Up Now. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.
- Update both phones, then use Quick Start. Old phone unlocked, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, new phone beside it, both plugged in. It ties up both for several minutes.
- Erase last. Once the new phone works: unpair Apple Watch, sign out of iCloud and the App Store, turn off Find My, then choose Erase All Content and Settings. Know your Apple Account password.
Friday Morning: Sign In Fresh and Have Everything Ready
Apple doesn’t keep you signed in once you close the browser, so sign in again. Apple’s pages say nothing about waiting rooms, error screens, purchase limits or delivery dates slipping past October 23, and we won’t guess.
Have these ready:
- Apple Account email and password
- Your card (matching billing address), Apple Card in Wallet, or Apple Upgrade details
- Your choices: storage, color, carrier, AppleCare yes or no
- Your old phone’s model and an honest condition rating
- Your carrier account login
- A street address (no P.O. box) or your pickup store
- A mobile number for text updates

After You Order: Changes, Returns and Free Setup Help
- Change it (see Apple’s order help). Apple: "You may be able to edit the item if the status reads Order Placed or Processing." You can cancel online while it’s Processing. Once it has prepared for shipment, the shipping address can’t be changed.
- Return it. Apple’s window is 14 calendar days from the day you receive it. The iPhone must be in good condition and original packaging, with all cords, adapters and documentation. A damage fee may apply to an Apple Upgrade phone not returned in good working condition. Returning it may not cancel your wireless account. Apple shows no 2026 holiday extension as of October 14.
- Pick it up only after Apple’s QR-code notice, with your order number, government photo ID and the QR code or Wallet pass. Screenshots are not accepted.
- Get free setup help. Buy from Apple and get a free, one-on-one online Personal Setup session. The email invitation arrives on delivery.
What’s in the Box and What Costs Extra
- In the box: the phone with iOS 27 and a 1 m USB-C cable. No power adapter. Apple’s quoted fast charge, about 50% in about 20 minutes, needs a 60W-capable adapter sold separately.
- Apple Pencil (USB-C): Apple says it is "coming later this year." Not in the box.
- Apple’s cases, orderable October 16: iPhone Duo Case, $79, and iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand, $129. The hinge cover is part of the phone, not an accessory.
We aren’t recommending any case or screen protector yet.
Pre-Order Now or Wait for Reviews? What We Know and Don’t
The honest box, since nobody can say which is better yet:
- No full independent reviews yet, and no review date has been reported.
- First-generation hardware. Apple publishes no hinge-life rating.
- Battery: up to 24 hours typical use, versus 30 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Those are Apple’s lab numbers, tested on preproduction units, and "actual results may vary."
- Weight and unlock: 254 grams (iPhone 18 Pro Max: 249). Touch ID only, no Face ID.
- Price: $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro at every storage size.
- Your safety net: the 14-day return window, though a return cancels a trade-in.
Apple’s AppleCare fee page lists $99 for inner display damage with AppleCare+. Without it, MacRumors reports that Apple lists $999 for the same repair. Apple’s own repair page wouldn’t load when we checked, so confirm the figure there.
Ordering for a Parent: Five Things to Decide
- Whose Apple Account and credit? Apple Upgrade and Apple Card installments both need the buyer’s own credit approval.
- Whose address? Apple doesn’t ship to P.O. boxes, and the carrier may require a signature. For unlocked-iPhone pickup, "the purchaser or a designated pickup contact" can collect.
- Any carrier deal? An iPhone bought on apple.com can "in most cases" be activated later, Apple says, but some deals "may require preparation with the carrier at the time of purchase."
- AppleCare? AppleCare One Family is $49.99 a month for eligible devices in a Family Sharing group.
- Setup day. Use the Personal Setup session and Quick Start with both phones side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the iPhone Duo pre-order start?
5:00 a.m. Pacific on Friday, October 16 (8:00 a.m. Eastern), Apple’s stated time. The table above has your zone.
What is the iPhone Duo return policy?
Apple allows 14 calendar days from the day you receive it, in good condition and original packaging. Carriers set their own windows, above.
Do I pay sales tax up front if I pay monthly?
Yes. Sales tax is figured on the full price and is due with your order, even on a monthly plan. With Apple Card Monthly Installments it goes on your Apple Card at the card’s regular rate; AT&T and T-Mobile charge it on the full price at the time of sale. At 8% that’s about $160 on a $1,999 phone.
Will I lose the credits on my current phone if I upgrade?
Usually, yes. If your current phone is still earning monthly carrier credits from an earlier deal, paying it off or trading it in early ends the credits you haven’t received, and you may owe the rest of its balance. Check with your carrier first.
Are these facts current?
